How To Prepare For Your Christmas Family Photoshoot

Fantastic, you’ve booked your slot at the Retykle Christmas family photographs and now you’re wondering “well, what the heck do I wear” or maybe you’re thinking “how am I going to get my kids to sit still for 10 mins for photo’s”?

Here are some simple tips to think about while you prepare for your Christmas photo’s.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach here, you simply want the photographs to reflect you as a family so do take into consideration your personal style and individual needs. Everyone is different so just come to have some fun!

1. Remember it’s Christmas! This is the one time of year it’s acceptable to look a little silly. Maybe you all have Christmas jumpers that’s traditional for your family to wear each year. If you have a Christmas photo tradition remember to keep that in mind. Don’t forget about fun accessories like Christmas earrings or lovely red or green hairbands. Tis the season to be jolly!

2. Compliment each other. If you’re going for a more subtle look, pick 2 colours that compliment each other and each family member can wear different shades of that colour. I love neutral tones because it doesn’t take away from the subject - you. This is the one time of year that it’s lovely to wear Christmas colours, choose your outfits at the same time and lay them out together on the bed to see how they look together.

3. This is the one time of year where matching outfits can work. Some of us have a matching Christmas pyjama tradition (ahem… not me, cough cough). Bring that Christmas cheer into your photo’s and it’ll definitely get the kids in the mood!

4. Go for lighter colours rather than dark. Try to avoid black shirts or tops. Blacks easily soak up the light and often looks like big dark blocks of nothingness. Stick with warmer neutral or Christmas colours.

5. Be comfortable. Above all, make sure you and the kids are all comfortable and happy in what you’re wearing. The goal is to get beautiful photographs with everyone feeling happy and an honest reflection of each of you.

6. Don’t arrive hangry! Make sure you and the kids are all reasonably watered and fed. You’ll also want to bring some snacks (although there will be some available) to keep everyone going.

7. Think about offering the kids a reward - very un-PC I know but sometimes you just have to tempt them with a little reward at the end to get 10 minutes of some happy smiles. Spend some time in the days leading up to the shoot and explain how fun the experience will be and have a think about whether you would like to offer them a reward after the shoot to keep them going.

The most important thing to remember is to come ready to HAVE FUN!
