5 Ways to Bring Nature Into Your Home Design

Our homes are not only spaces for us to live, work, entertain, and play, but they are our safe havens and can greatly affect our mental health and wellbeing. Spending time outdoors and in natural environments has proven mental health benefits and while we should all aim to spend more time outside, by incorporating nature into your home’s design you can create a visually appealing, relaxing, and functional space for the whole family.

Integrate high quality, natural materials

The rise of fast furniture has also meant a rise in the use of materials like particleboard or laminate which are not recyclable and do not biodegrade. When purchasing new items, look for high quality, natural materials such as solid wood which can be more easily repaired or refinished or natural rattan which grows quickly in nature and is biodegradable.

Greenery & Plants

Adding live plants into the home is an easy way to add natural greenery into our lives however, you can think beyond decor and also look at function. Set up a plant shelf or a living wall to divide living spaces. Grow herbs in the kitchen, add air purifying plants in every room, or hang fresh eucalyptus leaves in the shower. Look for plants that are suitable for your climate and the sunlight it will receive versus just design trends to ensure plants have a longer lifespan.

Blur the Lines between indoor & outdoor living

If you’re fortunate enough to have outdoor space, curate your outdoor spaces the same way you do indoor spaces for entertaining, dining, or relaxing. Look for materials specifically designed to withstand harsh outdoor elements and aim to extend your traditional indoor living spaces into the outdoors beyond just a chair or table. Add textiles, an outdoor speaker, store plates or cutlery in an outdoor cabinet for dining or toys and paints for easy outdoor play.

Bring in Fresh Air and Natural Light

As much as possible, welcome in fresh air and natural light by opening up curtains and windows. To make this more comfortable, consider installing mosquito screens to windows and terrace doors or install safety bars or latches for those living in high rise buildings to safely allow in more natural ventilation. More natural light brings a wealth of physical and mental health benefits while also helping grow your indoor plants too.

Shop Sustainably

Support nature and the environment by shopping sustainably. Embrace the circular economy by shopping secondhand. If you’re buying new furniture pieces, take advantage of try before you buy options like Dalisay Collection’s Flexible Ownership Plans, which allow you to ensure you love a piece before committing to its long term ownership. Even with children or pets at home, aim to purchase high quality pieces that can last a long time and can be refinished or repaired versus purchasing fast furniture which often fills local landfills.
