HOW TO:

Upcycled Craft Garden

Loom loom, garden bloom! Crafting with kids can get pricey but one way that you can keep your budget in check and be kind to the earth is by using recycled materials.

For this craft we have our Retykle Ambassador’s, @littlecitytales, back to show us a fun and easy craft with things you already have at home! These will look beautiful and your tykes will be very proud of their work.

For this project, you'll need:

  • 1 empty egg carton
  • 4-5 empty tissue rolls
  • Yarn (any color)
  • 3 bottle caps
  • Cardboard
  • 1 cereal box (or any snack paper box)
  • Paint
  • Glue gun

Step 1: Loom Flowers

These loom flowers are pretty, easy, and super fun to make! First, trace a small cup onto the cardboard and cut out.

Then tape one end of your yarn to the cardboard and start wrapping around the circle, moving diagonally with each wrap until the whole circle is covered. The middle part will be raised, so no need to worry!

Next paint your tissue rolls green.

  • For 1 tissue roll, cut in half so you get two shorter stems.
  • For 3 tissue rolls, cut four slits that divide your circle in quadrants, about half way in length into your roll.

Next, cut two opposite segments into triangle shapes, with pointed bit at top. Gentle peel down the triangle shape to form your leaves. You will need to paint this part green too. You should also get two small triangle cut outs. Keep these for your grass.

Step 2: Cereal Box Flowers

For this step, take the cereal or snack box and cut apart and use the larger flat pieces.

Paint them in different colours and cut out a flower shape. If you wish to layer two pieces together, simply punch or poke a hole through the middle and attach them together using a paper fastener.

Step 3: Grass for the Garden

Next, cut out the cup shaped side of your egg carton. Paint it in different shades of green. Remember to paint the sides as well!

Then using a glue gun, adhere your little triangle cut outs from the tissue rolls (in step 2) to the front edge, to resemble grass.

Step 4: Garden Assembly

Using a glue gun, stick the bottle caps onto your loom flowers in the middle.

Next, stick the flowers onto your three longer tissue rolls. Glue your cereal box flowers onto the shorter tissue rolls.

Finally, insert everything into your egg carton and your mini garden is ready!

We added a rainbow sign and played with some upcycled butterflies. You are allowed to get wild with your imagination!
