Upcycled Doodle Activity with Artist Aarti

Mother of 2 tykes, professional artist, and Retykle Ambassador, Aarti has an eye for design and a mind for creativity. She shares with us a doodle activity she and her daughter do to practice mindfulness and spend some quality time together.

Aarti sees, listens, imagines, and draws - her art always has a story to tell. When she is working, it brings mindfulness into her life as she channels its positivity and creativity into each line she draws.

With her process in mind, she shows us through a doodle with me activity, which can be done with a few simple materials you already have at home, that you don't need to purchase new art supplies to create something with someone you love.

With all the things we have to do in the day, it's nice to sit down together and create something. One of our favourite things is doodling together! My 6-year-old daughter and I love doing this together. We make it our “mother-daughter” time.

Materials

I like to use upcycle Kraft paper or gift wrap (turn it over). You can even use a newspaper. Whatever you have handy will be work.

Then depending on your selected theme, all you need is a sharpie or two or some colour sketch pens

The Creative Process

What we like to do is take turns to draw our doodle patterns and see what it builds up to be. It can have a theme or even be an abstract design, with simple drawings of specific icons or random lines and patterns.

It’s a fun and relaxing activity helping us to be in the moment and enjoy each other’s company. My daughter usually has a long story to share while we doodle away!

Doodling together has been some of the best moments spent together, and to top it off, we end up having a beautiful personalised and unique piece of art.

Doodle Benefits

Sounds like fun? Here’s what makes doodling even more interesting:

  • Doodling gives your brain a break while still paying attention to outside stimuli. It improves your memory and makes you more creative.
  • It may also help reduce stress and process emotions as it is linked to the expression of the inner self and the way the subconscious thinks.
  • Doodling helps you learn more and understand yourself. It makes you a better listener and also helps boost your mood!

An added bonus is that you can use this personalised handmade doodle as gift wrapping which will be a joy to anyone who receives it!

Another creative pursuit we have as a family is Emily's Kindness Cards. We make cards and drawings and send them to people around the world who are alone in hospital who need kindness and compassion. Our hope is that this will help cheer them up.
